My Soldier Boy

A darling child is born today
An angel of a boy
His father's eyes well up with pride
I cry sweet tears of joy
I wrap him up in hope and love
I keep him safe and warm
Fond memories can't fill the void
My baby's gone to war

A towhead boy plays on the path
B'tween fragrant fields of hay
His dimpled smile shines in the sun
Blue eyes light up the day
Toy soldiers lined up in a row
Toy enemies at bay
Playthings long since put to rest
My boy has gone away

My now grown son looks down on me
Says, "Mom, I'll be alright"
I hold him dearly in my heart
Though he's not in my sight
He's gone to war so that we all
May safely sleep the night
For while I pray here on my knees
My son has gone to fight
