I just wanted to take a minute and recognize a volunteer organization that deserves a bit of attention. Spirit of America has decided to, "help Americans serving abroad assist people in need." According to its website:
Our mission is to expand the abilities of Americans serving abroad to improve the quality of life of people at the grass roots level. Our objectives are to:
Increase the reach, scale and impact of the informal humanitarian activities that take place on the front lines in troubled regions.
Contribute charitable goods that can have a positive, practical and timely impact in the local communities where American personnel are involved.
Improve foreign perceptions of the American people and our presence abroad.
One of the organization's current missions is to help the Marines near Fallujah equip TV stations in the area. Spirit of America had the ambitious goal of raising $100,000 for this project. Because of postive press coverage and the generosity of citizens that want to support our troops ("hearts and minds" approach), it has raised more than $750,000 so far.
Visit their website to learn more and perhaps donate to one of their causes. Furthermore, if you know of a soldier or unit with the SBCT that needs help with a specific project in Mosul, please read the "Make a Request" instructions. The Operation Pencil, Operation Blanket project comes to mind if anyone knows the soldier leading that effort. An active service member must initiate the request.
