PORTLAND, Maine (AP) A National Guard soldier from Maine was killed and three others were wounded Tuesday when their convoy was attacked in northern Iraq.
UPDATE The Portland Press Herald, which has a reporter and a photographer embedded with the 133rd Engineering Battalion, reported that one member of the unit was killed, one was seriously injured and two had minor injuries.
A fifth soldier who was not assigned to the battalion also was wounded in the attack.
A spokesman for the Coalition press information center said one soldier was killed but could not confirm whether that soldier was from Maine.
Maine National Guard Maj. Peter Rogers said members of the 133rd Engineering Battalion were outside Mosul when their convoy was attacked at 9 a.m. Iraqi time, or 2 p.m. in Maine, with some sort of explosive device. He said the unit fought back and ''neutralized'' the enemy.
''They attacked the aggressors,'' Rogers said. ''They were able to stop the attack.''
Rogers said the soldiers' families have been notified. He did not identify the soldiers and did not know the extent of their injuries.
Rogers said Iraqi insurgents in recent weeks have been igniting explosives on roadsides as American troops pass by.
Gov. John Baldacci was awaiting further information about the injured and planned to call their families to express condolences on behalf of the people of Maine, said his spokesman, Lee Umphrey.
The 133rd has its headquarters in Gardiner and arrived in Iraq in March. There are more than 500 soldiers in the unit who are involved in reconstruction.
