Fort Lewis troops in Mosul have been spared the heavy fighting that has taken place the past week in Fallujah, Baghdad and south-central Iraq, according to Army officials and other reports.

But there has been no letup in the steady pace of attacks on coalition forces across northern Iraq.

Officials said Stryker brigade troops and Iraqi security forces killed at least 20 insurgents who attacked them in four incidents Friday and Saturday in Mosul.

Soldiers shot three gunmen who opened fire on Mosul city hall during a demonstration, and killed 12 men who fired on them from a truck with a rocket-propelled grenade, according to Army press releases and news accounts.

U.S. military officials also said Stryker base camps in central and southern Mosul came under mortar fire Monday, and a brigade camp in Tall Afar was under mortar attack Sunday. In both cases there were no injuries to brigade troops or damage to equipment, officials said.

But in northern Iraq, such attacks have long been seen as routine.
