It's been a year since Iraq's Republican Guard occupied the barracks here, but not all signs of the past have been erased.

Painted in Arabic on a thick concrete wall in Sgt. 1st Class John Keene's quarters are two exhortations, both attributed to Saddam Hussein.

"The wealth of Iraq belongs to all Iraqi people," reads one.

Warns the other, "From the heavens and the heart, God knows what is in each man's heart."

Iraqis hired to work inside Camp Marez see the signs and "just laugh," said Keene, who will photograph the inscriptions before he paints them over.

"They all read it and say, 'Liar! Liar!' " he chuckled.
