While Wisconsin Reserve and National Guard units continue to arrive home from Iraq, others are still getting settled into the routine of living and working in a war zone.

“It’s really been a roller coaster,” Spc. Mary Flynn wrote in a recent e-mail to the Green Bay Press-Gazette.

The 22-year-old Lakewood native arrived in Iraq with the Wisconsin National Guard’s 139th Mobile Public Affairs Detachment in February and is currently in Mosul working out of one of the former palaces of Saddam Hussein.

“Hanging around our office at the palace, one can get pretty complacent. But the next day you’ll go out on a mission (a school ribbon-cutting, for instance) and every minute of that convoy you are more than aware how vulnerable you are.”

The 139th is made up of broadcasters, photographers and reporters who are charged with documenting the work coalition forces are doing with Iraqis, according to Sgt. 1st Class, Julie Friedman, a Green Bay resident assigned to the unit.

“There are so many wonderful stories that you don’t always hear about in the mainstream media, but we’re helping to change that,” she wrote.
