HALF MOON BAY -- When Lynn Kelly heard from her son-in-law -- Army 1st Lt. Curtis Wright, stationed in Mosul, Iraq -- that Iraqi school kids didn't have basic supplies like pens and paper, Kelly did what any good mom would do: she put together a care package.
"I started sending over boxes of stuff, and Curtis said, 'This is going to supply enough for two schools,'" said Kelly, who owns vacation cottages in Pescadero. "I thought I'd sent over enough for two students."
Wright -- who met Kelly's daughter RoseLynn at the University of Southern California -- is stationed in Mosul with the Stryker Brigade Combat Team, helping to repair dilapidated schools. Funds sent to the region, however, ap Kelly and her husband, Mark Griffith, decided to see if other Coastsiders wanted to pitch in. This Saturday, businesses in Half Moon Bay and Pescadero will host a special drive to gather school supplies for Iraq.
"It's a nonpolitical way for people to be involved and try to help with the situation," Kelly said.
