GASSAWAY — After spending much of the past 14 months crossing Iraq in support of the Army’s first Stryker brigade combat team, the green, rolling hills of Braxton County looked mighty good to members of the 1092nd Engineer Battalion’s Alpha Company.
“It feels great to be back,” Capt. Joe Fealy, the company commander, said Wednesday, shortly after alighting from a bus that returned Alpha Company to its home base at the Braxton County Armory after a layover at Fort Bragg, N.C.
“There are a lot of things I won’t be taking for granted. The presence of my family is the main thing,” Fealy said. “And being able to get into my own vehicle and go wherever I want, like shopping at Wal-Mart or going to McDonald’s, without having to worry about security — I’m really looking forward to that.”
The article goes on to describe the unit's experiences in Samarra and Mosul in detail.
