FORT LEWIS - Thousands of local service men and women are in Iraq right now. At the same time, thousands of families here are waiting, watching and worrying about the increasing violence and their loved ones.

One young mother showed KOMO 4 News the joy that helps get her through this awful waiting.

Meet Alexandria. She's 13 pounds of bright-eyed joy.

The little baby girl helps keeps mom, Amber Pilkington in Fort Lewis, connected to dad and husband Jeffrey, in Iraq.

"It's hard that he's gone," said Amber, "because I look at her and she looks so much like him, so that makes it hard. But it makes it easier too knowing that I have a piece of him home with me."

Jeffrey was able to come home three weeks ago for Alexandria's birth. But he's back in Iraq now with his Stryker brigade from Fort Lewis. They're up north in Mosul, away from the violence in the Sunni triangle, but far from safety.
