MOSUL, Iraq -- Soldiers of the Alabama Army National Guard’s 115th Signal Battalion --Corps Signal Support Battalion -- assumed the responsibility for providing communications support to Coalition forces in northern Iraq during a flag unfurling ceremony here March 29, marking an historic event in the battalion’s lineage.

“This is the first time, since December 25, 1959, that the battalion colors have been uncased on foreign soil and in a combat zone,” said Lt. Col. An-thony Cottles, commander of the 115th.

The soldiers, based in Florence, Haleyville, Hanceville, Moulton, Russellville and Sheffield, recently arrived in Iraq to relieve the outgoing 234th Signal Battalion, Iowa Army National Guard.

During the 115th’s scheduled one-year deployment, the unit will continue to provide constant tactical communications support to Task Force Olympia and other Coalition forces supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom II in the northern region.
