Another Oregon soldier has died in Iraq. U.S. Army Spc. Philip Gerard Rogers, 23, from Gresham, died in a roadside bombing in the Mosul area Sunday morning.

Philip's father, Rex, said his son was serving as a cook in the Army and was responsible for the dining hall in Mosul.

"He's just the best son anyone could ever have," Rex said.

After Philip graduated from Gresham High School in 1999, he joined the Army for a three-year tour of duty with the intention of using the money to study culinary arts.

After he finished his tour, he reenlisted and was given the opportunity to manage the dining hall at the Army base in Mosul, but volunteered for patrol duty.

"I told him not to volunteer for anything but he is always taking on responsibility," said Rex.

Philip and his passenger died while transporting five tons of food, his father said.
