Army Capt. Alex Fyfe watched barefoot Iraqi children kick balls made of straw alongside tanks and thought of his childhood in Rocky Point, where he never had to worry about proper equipment or green fields to play soccer, the sport that has been his passion since he was 5 years old.

Stationed in Iraq, Fyfe, 26, is assigned to be a liaison between the U.S. Army and the government of 10 villages around Mosul as part of the rebuilding effort, his parents in Rocky Point said. When asking village leaders what kind of help they wanted, one of their requests - along with medical supplies and a new police station - was to start a youth soccer program.

That was a request Fyfe, a standout soccer player at Rocky Point High School, knew he could fulfill.
