Recent suicide bombings in Baghdad and Karbala — believed to be the work of foreign nationals — once again have heightened concerns that Iraq’s borders are not as secure as they need to be.
Over the past year, U.S. and coalition authorities often have spoken of their commitment to prevent foreign terrorists from infiltrating the country. After recent simultaneous attacks that killed more than 140 people, L. Paul Bremer, the U.S. administrator in Iraq, pledged $60 million to help shore up the fledgling Iraqi Border Patrol, proposing to add hundreds more vehicles and security personnel.
It’s an issue that has come up again and again.
