Deployment of the new U.S. Army Stryker brigade, the new national missile defense system, new C-17 heavy-lift aircraft and upgraded Army and Air Force training facilities in Alaska are all proceeding on schedule, Alaska's top military commanders told state legislators in a briefing.

Lt. Gen. Caroll H. "Howie" Chandler and Brig. Gen. Craig Campbell, the state of Alaska's Adjutant General who heads National Guard units in the state, briefed the Legislature's Joint Armed Services Committee Feb. 25.

Chandler said the Stryker Brigade, one of the Army's new quick-mobilization units that will be based at Fort Wainwright in Fairbanks, will be in place and combat-ready in May 2005.

Three hundred of the specialized combat vehicles to be used by the new 172nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team will arrive in Alaska this spring, followed by new Army personnel to begin training with the equipment this summer, Chandler said.

Mobilization of the brigade will bring about 2,400 new uniformed military to Alaska in the next two years, he said. About $1.2 billion in new construction of facilities to support the brigade is under way.

New C-17 aircraft will arrive in 2007 to replace C-130s now flown by the 517th Airlift Squadron at Elmendorf Air Force Base, Chandler said. The new aircraft are designed to support deployment of the Stryker brigade, he said.
