RABIAH, Iraq — Terrain and high-tech equipment are two of the major differences separating U.S. military border operations in the northeast with those in the west of Iraq.

While troops in the northeast work in a mountainous environment, soldiers in the west have the tactical advantage of moving across a relatively flat landscape.

That advantage coupled with possessing some of the Army’s newest equipment gives troops of the 1st Squadron, 14th Cavalry Regiment, who are based in the northwest, the ability to do much more than monitor and support members of the Iraqi Border Patrol.

The key to this robust capability is the debut of a new battlefield concept called the Stryker Brigade Combat Team. In short, the first fully operational Stryker brigade provides commanders with the ability to rapidly deploy troops to a hot spot in large, armored, high-tech vehicles.
