LACEY -- Lessons in empathy don't normally include soldiers in combat gear.
But at Komachin Middle School on Friday morning, the two came together in the culmination of a two-week project in which students and teachers donated 10 boxes of letters and supplies to be sent to soldiers of Task Force Olympia in Mosul, Iraq.

Some students wrote letters of encouragement; others drew pictures. Several brought in beef jerky, magazines, candy, gum and personal care items like eye drops, deodorant and shampoo. Some even donated DVDs.

"It was definitely a very successful drive," said Komachin Middle School Para Educator Sheri Keith, who organized the project after looking for a way to help students understand empathy.

Lesson learned.
