MOSUL, Iraq – In an effort to advance and improve the educational infrastructure here, members of 2nd Battalion, 3rd Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division (Stryker Brigade Combat Team) officially opened the newly refurbished Ikraa School Wednesday, making it the second school they reopened within a week.

“It means a lot to the students and the citizens of this neighborhood to improve the beauty of a school,” said Headmaster Mahmod Muhamid Rasheed at the school’s ceremonial opening. “The renovations will improve the psyche of the students so that they are ready to learn and want to learn.”

The 1,000-student elementary school, located in southeastern Mosul, underwent extensive repairs to give the students a safer learning environment.

“Our main concern was the safety and security of the students attending classes here,” explained Maj. Larry L. Ogg, a civil affairs officer in the 3rd Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division (Stryker Brigade Combat Team).

According to Ogg, before the repairs were made, insufficient lighting and ventilation hampered the students’ learning while broken glass littered the classrooms and hallways.

“It is important to coalition forces that students have a safe, sound place to learn,” Ogg said during a speech to teachers and staff.

The repairs included installing new ceiling fans, lights, doors, tile and windows in the classrooms. Other renovations included repairing the inoperable bathrooms and washbasins and applying a fresh coat of paint to the walls.

Coalition forces worked together with the newly established Ministry of Education to accomplish the repairs. Because of this ongoing relationship, four more schools are due to reopen in the near future.

“Our goal is to work with the director of education to develop a budget for each school, help with small projects and maintain repairs of the schools. This will help maintain a good learning environment for the students,” Ogg said.

The children were all smiles during the school ceremony.

“The students know and understand that coalition forces are here to help and serve the people,” Rasheed said. “We always do our best to teach the students about the coalition forces.”

“Our number one priority is education. Inside these walls are future presidents and leaders. They are the future of Iraq,” said Ogg.
