The U.S. Army is transforming itself from an industrial-age Goliath built to fight on large battlefields into a nimbler, high-tech fighting force able to engage enemies with lightning speed.
It is a transformation that Fort Polk is at the forefront of as it becomes home to the 2nd Stryker Brigade this year, helping to ensure the post's security as another round of base closings gears up. The Stryker brigades are the cornerstone of the new Army.
"We hope we can make Fort Polk the home of the new military as we are looking into the future," U.S. Rep. Rodney Alexander, D-Quitman, said shortly before President George W. Bush visited the post last month. Bush's military construction budget for the coming year earmarks $70.95 million for six projects at Fort Polk - the largest amount of money coming into the state from the proposal.
The Army's transformation will cost about $23 billion during the next seven years and will reorganize the Army around brigades rather than divisions.
