NIRTC graduates first Hamam Al Alil company

MOSUL, IRAQ (Feb. 20, 2004) – The security of Hamam Al Alil, a small town south of Mosul, grew this week as the first company of Iraq Civil Defense Corps personnel who are tasked with securing the city graduated Thursday at the Northern Iraq Regional Training Center.

The 60 soldiers graduated from the two-week training course at NIRTC and were presented with certificates of graduation by the senior officers in the company. This company is the first unit of what will be the fifth battalion of ICDC in northern Iraq.

Soldiers from 5th Bn., 20th Inf. Regt., one of the battalions from 3rd Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division (Stryker Brigade Combat Team) that is operating in the Mosul region, provides oversight for the training conducted at NIRTC.

“Together we are setting the example for security, health, education and agriculture in the region by working together,” said Lt. Col. Karl Reed, commander 5th Battalion, 20th Infantry Regiment.

After the ceremony, dignitaries which included the Governor of Ninewa Province Ghanim Sultan Abdullha Al Basso and Reed moved a short distance to the newly renovated Hamam Al Alil military barracks. There they dedicated the building as open and ready to serve the people of Hamam Al Alil and Iraq by housing the ICDC unit.

Iraq Civil Defense Corps personnel are an integral part in establishing a secure and safe environment in Iraq for the Iraqi people and Coalition forces.
