Karen Leming of the Tacoma Fire Department's Engine 10 is giving U.S. troops in Iraq the shirt off her back.
So are Stacy Waterworth, Bruce Bouyer and scores of fellow firefighters, police and other public-safety officers around the region at the one-year anniversary of the start of war in Iraq...
"Some shirts are a little frayed, gently worn because they're literally from off their backs," says Liz Jackson of Lakewood, who is collecting the assortment...
Solely by word of mouth, e-mail and shoe leather, Jackson has sparked a huge response. More than 200 shirts have been collected from around Western Washington. She hopes for more from around the state and beyond before Tuesday's deadline. The shirts will be packaged and sent to Fort Lewis' Stryker Brigade in Iraq by volunteers Feb. 28 at Camp Murray, the state's National Guard headquarters.

I met Liz at the deployment ceremony when she gave me a heartstone and some very compassionate words. She left an impression on me, and I knew then that she was a very special person with a very kind spirit! What an awesome new project.
I saw this article earlier this morning here on Stryker News and contacted my local fire department in Bradenton, Florida. They are sending off some shirts on Monday and overnighting them to Liz. They thought it was such a wonderful way of honoring our heroes. Liz has a HUGE heart to come up with this. The soldiers will love it!
That is great! I haven't done a very good job of keeping up with all of Liz's projects. You can follow the Operation Heartstone or Operation Support Our Troops links on our link page to see everything they are doing. Pretty incredible.
Thanks so much for the link. Wow! Liz is amazing -- and I am so happy that you let us know about the article :). I spoke to her earlier today about what address to give to the fire department to ship the shirts to. She was so sweet. She had just made a "fallen hero" heart pin and it was obvious that though this was an honor for her, she was sad to be having to do it.
My nephew, Stryker Brigade member Michael M Merila was killed on February 16,04. I would like to meet with fellow soldiers which were with him when the convoy was struck. How can i find the individuals?
