None of her work in reiki, the art of healing touch, or counseling bereaved families as a Spiritualist minister prepared Charlene Robbins for the shock of learning her son, Thomas, an Army sergeant, died in Iraq during a conflict she didn't believe in.
"The pain is heavy," the mother said. "It keeps coming in waves. I get angry. It seems so senseless. Self-serving politicians created the situation in Iraq. I want to see America's young people planting and building, rather than killing and destroying."
Surrounded by flickering white votive candles and a memorial centerpiece of white hydrangeas, snapdragons and carnations, Robbins sat at a dining room table Thursday afternoon with her daughter, Deborah, and tried to make sense of the senseless.
