MOSUL, Iraq - Two U.S. Army pilots - one of them from a unit attached to the Stryker brigade - were killed late Friday when their helicopter crashed not long after takeoff from their base in Qayyarah.
The OH-58D Kiowa Warrior went down about nine miles northwest of the base about 8 p.m., said Lt. Col. Reggie Mason, commander of the 3rd Squadron, 17th Cavalry Regiment.
One of the pilots was from Mason's squadron. The other was from the regiment's 2nd Squadron. Their names had not been released by Saturday night.
The men were flying together for one last joint mission before the 3rd Squadron was to formally take over for the 2nd on Saturday, Mason said.
The 3-17th, from Fort Drum, N.Y., is in Iraq supporting the Fort Lewis-based Stryker brigade.
