Soldiers Conduct Operations, Detain Individuals

MOSUL, Iraq - Coalition Forces detained six people and confiscated illegal weapons and ammunition yesterday in northern Iraq.

The 1st Squadron, 14th Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Brigade (Stryker) 2nd Infantry Division, which is attached to the 101st, received from the Coalition for Iraqi National Unity, a concerned group of local citizens: 50 rocket-propelled grenade rounds, seven complete RPGs, nine hand grenades, 750 14.5 mm rounds, three Night Vision Goggles for use with RPGs, 2,200 7.62 mm rounds, six 40 mm rounds, one 82 mm mortar tube, 20 82 mm rounds, one 60 mm mortar tube, three sniper rifles and one 23 mm twin gun anti-aircraft artillery.

Soldiers from the 2nd Brigade Combat Team (BCT), 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) apprehended five individuals during a cordon-and-knock operation in the city of Mosul. One individual was wanted for dealing weapons; the other four were detained for hiding the target. A search of the house revealed two pistols.

During a large-scale cordon operation in a southwest Mosul neighborhood, soldiers from the 2nd BCT searched 897 homes and 92 businesses. The operation yielded five AK-47s, four rifles, one shotgun, one RPK heavy machine gun, 157 AK-47 magazines and 170 7.62 mm rounds. One individual was taken into custody for possession of the machine gun.

Soldiers from the 2nd BCT discovered and disposed of three 60 mm mortar tubes yesterday afternoon during a patrol.

The 101st continues to work with the citizens and leaders of Iraq to make it a safe, prosperous, and democratic nation.
