Veterans Day

Nov- 9-2003 » Filed Under: Tributes

One of our good friends, a Captain in the Army, is deploying to Iraq today as part of the inaugural Stryker Brigade. He's the second of our close friends to be deployed to the region; the first flew Marine F-16s in the beginning of the campaign and has since returned safely. I'm personally very appreciative of the sacrifice they and their loved ones make on my family's behalf. Since tomorrow Tuesday is Veterans Day, I think it's only fitting to say thank you.

Thanks to you too, Marcel.

UPDATE: Armed Liberal offers his thoughts on Veterans Day as well.

Thank you. You, also, are a good American citizen as demonstrated many times in your correspondence with me and through the presence of this website.

Just a little note about an experience with the state of California. I worked for the state civil service for 12 years (1968-1979) and never got Veteran's Day off because, during this period, the state didn't recognize the federal holiday as one of their own.

This seemed ironic to me as I was a disabled VietNam vet. If I wanted the day off I had to take vacation leave. Federal civil service employees, veterans and non-veterans, alike, got the day off in recognition of military vets.

I would like to personally add all people who were affiliated to the war efforts of all eras and the families who sacrificed their sons and daughters to military service in the recognition
this holiday represents.

I'm sorry to hear that.

Yes, the "thank you" can be extended to all those past and present that have served.

A large group of millions we never give thanks to are the federal civil service employees and other non-uniform people who work in the support jobs that make a military complex even possible.

These include civilians involved in aircraft and naval design, construction and repair; weapons and allied systems; medical services; food services; personnel and records administration; equipment and supplies; and so many others I can't list.

In sum, most Americans are either involved directly or indirectly in support of our military. We can give a collective thank you to every person who has or will have a supportive role in ensuring the efficacy of our military.

As the wife of the Captain referenced above I would first like to thank you (Todd) for posting so much information regarding the current situation in Iraq and for specifically including articles on the Stryker Brigade. I know that there are a lot of people who are very interested to follow the progress of this unit.

Second, I would also like to offer my thanks to all of those who work so hard to support our military - both the infastructure and the personnel. The hard work of so many uniformed and non-uniformed individuals helps me to relax somewhat while my husband takes part in the war. I know that their continuous hard work will help to keep him that much safer during his time in the Middle East.

Have you gotten used to saying "husband" yet?

De nada, my pleasure.
